Eureka Earthquake, The U.S. Geological Service is reporting that a magnitude 5.9 earthquake struck Baja California, Mexico Wednesday.
According to the USGS, the earthquake occurred at 1:48 pm ET and occured at a depth of 4.3 miles which makes it a relatively shallow earthquake. The epicenter was placed at 13 miles northwest of Guadalupe Victoria, Baja California, Mexico and 106 miles east of Tijuana, Mexico.
Within minutes of the tremor, respondents to an earthquake Web site reported light shaking felt as far away as Las Vegas and Phoenix. The strongest shaking was felt in Mexicali, Calexico, El Centro and Holtville.
In California, reports of shaking came as far away as Tehachapi and California City, both in Kern County.
In Mexico, officials evacuated government buildings in Tijuana and Mexicali while they assessed the situation, said Alfredo Escobedo, civil protection chief for Baja California.
There were no immediate reports of damage to San Diego County buildings. The quake could be felt on the fourth floor of the police department headquarters in downtown San Diego, as the building swayed for several seconds.
